Gardener – Mount Grace Priory
North Yorkshire | Full-Time | 36 Hours Per Week
Fixed-Term Contract – 9 Months Initially
Salary from £23,896 per annum pro rata

Join the team caring for one of England’s most remarkable historic landscapes.

English Heritage is seeking a Gardener to support the ongoing development and maintenance of the nationally significant gardens at Mount Grace Priory, alongside satellite sites, including Richmond Castle, Rievaulx Abbey and Barnard Castle.

This is a rare opportunity to work across a unique collection of heritage landscapes, from medieval monastic spaces to Arts & Crafts-inspired restoration projects. You’ll play an important role in maintaining high horticultural standards while helping shape the future of these exceptional visitor destinations.

Working within a collaborative gardening team, you’ll contribute to:

- The care and development of historic gardens and landscapes
- Seasonal planting and horticultural maintenance
- Restoration and enhancement projects
- Supporting and working alongside volunteers
- Delivering an outstanding visitor experience across multiple heritage sites

Mount Grace Priory features one of the best-preserved Carthusian monasteries in Britain, with gardens spanning medieval through to nineteenth-century design, including restoration work influenced by leading garden designer, Chris Beardshaw.

We’re looking for someone with:

- NVQ Level 2 in Amenity Horticulture (or equivalent)
- Experience within a professional horticultural environment
- A passion for historic gardens and landscape care
- The ability to work independently and as part of a wider team

In return, English Heritage offers:

- Comprehensive training and CPD
- Career progression opportunities
- Free English Heritage membership for you and up to six guests
- 25% discount in shops and cafés
- Matched pension contributions up to 10%
- Generous annual leave and wellbeing support
- Opportunities to attend English Heritage events

If you’re passionate about horticulture, heritage and working within extraordinary historic environments, we’d love to hear from you.
