About Penshurst Place

Penshurst Place is a nationally recognised Grade I listed historic garden and one of the oldest privately owned gardens in England, with gardening records dating back to 1346. The 11-acre formal gardens are set within 48 acres of grounds and are renowned for their historic character, extensive yew hedging, herbaceous borders, rose gardens, peony displays and seasonal interest throughout the year.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and skilled gardener to join our experienced team and help maintain and develop this important historic landscape to the highest standards.

The Role

This is a hands-on position working across all areas of the garden. The successful candidate will be involved in:

  • Maintenance of herbaceous borders, roses, shrubs and lawns.
  • Seasonal planting and plant husbandry.
  • Hedge cutting and pruning.
  • Garden presentation for visitors and events.
  • Assisting with garden development projects.
  • Safe operation and maintenance of horticultural machinery.
  • Supporting the wider garden team in the care of the historic gardens and grounds.

This role offers the opportunity to gain experience across a wide range of horticultural disciplines within a respected garden open to the public.

About You

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has practical horticultural experience in a professional setting.
  • Possesses good plant knowledge and an enthusiasm for gardening.
  • Takes pride in achieving high standards of presentation.
  • Is self-motivated and capable of working both independently and as part of a team.
  • Has a positive attitude and strong work ethic.
  • Holds a relevant horticultural qualification.
  • PA1 & Pa6a
  • Holds a full UK driving licence.
